Olympian Visits OWTS
By Ray Tanguay
On May 24, the Wolcott Tech Class Act Schools Council met with Olympic Bronze Medalist and New York City Marathon winner Rod Dixon. The students will be volunteering for Rod Dixon’s KidsMarathon on June 4th in Torrington. The Wolcott Tech students will be volunteering as registrars, student leaders, DJ, and as organizational helpers on the day of the KidsMarathon.
Mr. Dixon spent an hour talking to the Class Act Council about engaging hundreds of thousands of kids into health and running during his career. He reviewed his policy of 5201 which means 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, 2 hours of screen time, 1 hour of physical activity and 0 sugars and fast food. Rod also spoke about gaining the competitive edge during athletic contests and setting achievable goals in your personal, academic, and physical life styles.
Abbie Hanlon, a junior in electronics who plays volleyball, basketball, and softball says she enjoyed the inspirational story about Rod Dixon’s strategy to win the New York City Marathon and inspired her to bring his techniques to our school and athletic programs. She is looking forward to volunteering at the KidsMarathon to help inspire the younger generation of athletes.
Nick Buonocore, a junior in electronics who is on the boys volleyball team gained a better understanding of mental toughness and perseverance in sports using the techniques that Rod demonstrated. Nick is ready to volunteer at the KidsMarathon to work with the kids and mentor them for a healthier lifestyle.
Angel Lopez, a sophomore in MDET, who is on the boys soccer and boys volleyball team, learned that you can tackle Mount Everest and win if you take it one step at a time and organize your plan of attack. He is volunteering at the KidsMarathon because he likes donating his time back to his local community and feels that Rod Dixon’s message is important to everyone and this is a good way to help spread the word.
It was a great visit and everyone felt inspired and ready to bring Rod Dixon’s message to the Wolcott Tech Student Body. We are all looking forward to the KidsMarathon on June 4th and appreciate the visit from Rod Dixon and Tom Gaffney from Litchfield County Sports who is organizing the Torrington KidsMarathon.Back
